What a nice surprise on a Monday! Just as we suspected last week, and a while ago, Apple announced the MacBook Air with M3 CPUs. Besides the upgraded CPU, the new generation comes with higher WiFi speeds and a very welcome upgrade for external monitors – almost.

Update (March 4, 2024): This happened just as we were getting excited about last week’s leak! Apple just announced the MacBook Air with M3! The latest Apple Silicon Generation will be available for both the 13-inch and the 15-inch models. The super thin laptop’s design remains unchanged compared to previous generations.

In terms of performance, the M3 generation comes with a significant speed bump, more CPU and GPU cores, and an upgraded neural engine. Apple calls these new MacBook Airs the “World’s Best Consumer Laptop for AI” – whatever that exactly means. But if there was ever a DAW or a VST that would come to utilize said Neural engine, well, now that will (potentially) run faster.

The bigger news is a little addition that was a staple in Intel CPU times. You can now connect two external displays at a time, again. But that is only possible if you keep the lid closed. So, we’re almost back at Intel multiple display times, almost. The 13-inch model starts at $1099/£1299/€1529 and you can bump up RAM to 24 GB and storage to two terabytes. In addition, the bigger 15-inch model starts at $1299/£1499/€1829 with the same options for both RAM and storage. Both models are available for pre-order now and will start shipping on March 8, 2024, from Apple.

Apple Spring Event 2024: Will an M3 MacBook Air be released?

Apple traditionally updates some of its product ranges in Spring. And well-informed leakers like Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman have been hinting at a possible update just around the corner. That is, of Apple’s highly successful Macbook Air series.

So its not unlikely, that we’ll get an M3 Macbook Air in late March. Up until now, you can still get Macbook Air models with M2 CPUs and even with an M1. Besides the Mac Mini, the Mac Studio and the revamped Mac Pro, the Air series has still not been updated with Apple’s latest CPU generation. Given a newly leaked internal support document for Apple support staff hints at customer questions concerning new models, it seems very likely that at least some updates with the M3 generation will be announced in late March.

A new iPad Pro 2024: M3, OLED, and more are likely

Besides M3 Macbook Air models, Apple will very likely introduce overhauled iPad Pro and iPad Air models. While continuously upgrading both series with new CPUs and bigger memory in recent years, both have remained virtually the same for quite some years. Leakers like Gurman suggest that a bigger change of Apple’s tablet series might come.

More Information

Outside of the new M3 CPU, at least the iPad Pro series might receive a significant update for its display: OLED. Lower power consumption and better image quality – are essential for mobile music producers. And given the fact that Apple has been pushing its iPad series to be on par with low-level Macs in terms of computing power and abilities, OLED and M3 might make these viable to be an actual Mac replacement for some!
