Patchbays are usually hidden away in racks, but the Minibay and Patchwork bring them out onto the desktop for more creative possibilities.

Patchwork

Following on from the success of the Minibay, DF Audio has come up with a smaller version that focuses on guitar pedals. Patchwork is a 24-point patch bay that will simplify your routing through effects pedals. You can use it for guitar, of course, but I think it’s probably going to find the best use in the world of desktop synths and Eurorack.

DF Audio Patchwork

DF Audio Patchwork

The great thing is that you could potentially leave 12 pedals wired in. And then, to use them, all you need to do is patch your synth or guitar into the front panel. Each of the 12 channels has an input at the top and an output at the bottom, so you can chain up effects and processors in any way you choose. Far easier than messing about with plugging things directly into your pedals.

Minibay V2

I liked the original Minibay. It’s a 40-point audio patch bay that lends itself brilliantly to connecting and routing desktop synths and effects about the place. Version 2 doesn’t do anything revolutionary. It adjusts the position of the rear sockets and improves the labelling. It adds some solder points onto the main PCB for modifying mixer circuits. But probably the most useful change is to reorient the normalling switches onto the top. So now you can switch the normalled connections without having to search around on the back for tiny dip switches.

DF Audio Minibay v2

So version 2 is really just the second run of the original with a few improvements. It’s completely passive, just sits there and makes our complex arrangements of gear much simpler and easier to manipulate.

Availability

The Minibay V2 is available now for £144.04. The Patchwork will start shipping on the 12th of December for $160 Australian.

But will they offer enough in this crowded marketplace?

Wampler Pedals has announced the new ¢99 each Triumph and Phenom pedals. Brian Wampler has now entered the under ¢100 affordable pedal market and these look like they could be great drive pedals for the money.

Wampler Triumph

The first new effect pedal is the Wampler Triumph, an overdrive based on the Boss SD-1 and Digitech Bad Monkey.  This is one of Brian Wampler’s favourite circuits. However, the difference is not only the price but also the more effective EQ section, divided into bass, mid and treble.

Wampler Triumph

Similar to the Boss SD-1

In addition, it also has a toggle switch between smooth and punch. Plus a DIP switch with 2 slide switches that once again influence the effect sound. For the price, this sounds pretty good.

Wampler Phenom

Next up is the Wampler Phenom. It is fundamentally based on the Plextortion circuit but was developed from scratch using JFETs instead of OpAmps and diodes.

Wampler Phenom

A 5150-style distortion

5150

This one is supposed to remind us of the vintage 5150 sound. In addition to the 3-band EQ, gain and volume control it also has a toggle switch to go between bright and normal modes.

Budget Goodness?

The price point for both of these new pedals is fairly reasonable in my opinion.  Though I must say that it is already a very crowded marketplace. As there are a lot of overdrive and distortion pedals out there at around this price point.

I guess if you like the particular drive and distortion tones on offer, then they will appeal. Plus, you should be getting great build quality from Wampler as usual.

In Europe they work out 119 euros each; Wampler Triumph* and Phenom*

Check them both out in the video below, where you can see Brian Wampler showing them off.

A new addition to the Herbs & Stones family comes in the shape of the Solid Felt stereo multimode analogue filter. Here’s what we know.

Solid Felt

Herbs & Stones are known for their esoteric boxes of ingenious sound generation and manipulation. It’s sort of like what would happen if Teenage Engineering was run by hippies. And I mean that in a good, earthy, connected way to life and the universe. The boxes are unusual, artistic, and boutique, dripping in analogue vibes and coolness.

And so, arriving in this space, we have Solid Felt. The full specs are yet to be revealed, but we know that it’s a stereo multimode analogue filter in a desktop format. Similar perhaps to the Elta Music PF-3 but altogether more elaborate.

From the Instagram photo, I can pull out a few more thoughts. There are two filters, A and B, each with a CV controllable Mode knob, which makes me think you can morph from lowpass to bandpass to highpass. You’ve then got resonance and a CV controllable frequency cutoff. I solidly approve of the bypass buttons, something the PF-3 was sorely lacking. There’s also an A to B button, which probably lets you run the filters in series rather than parallel, as you normally would for stereo usage.

Nicely strange

There’s plenty of strangeness going on in the middle section with shaping, inverting and other such shenanigans, which gives the impression that there will be lots of modulation on offer.

Solid Felt looks great, and I definitely feel that desktop filters is going to become a bit of a thing, especially for people working in a DAWless environment.

Price and availability are to be announced, but we’ll update you when we get more information.

Can envelopes be extraordinary or are they just utilities you have cluttering up the place? SERRA offers some interesting possibilities within our old friend the ADSR.

SERRA

As a basic function, SERRA is a fully controllable 4-segment, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release module. The ADSR is held in a natty four-slider shape on the front panel that can be set by hand or controlled, varied and manipulated over CV. Give it a Gate or Trigger, and you’ll produce a smooth movement in voltage from the ENV output. But there’s more.

You have these two intriguing knobs at the top; an Attenuverter and an Offset.  These refer to the use of an input signal that can modulate and move the envelope about. You can boost and squash an envelope, invert it and widen it under external control. Or, without any external interference, you can use the Offset to add or move voltage shifting the envelope up and down in power and placement. This manipulated envelope arrives at its own output.

Nano Serra

Nano Serra

Other features include the ability to range itself from 1 ms to 40 seconds with options to widen it further with external CV. Each segment has an LED in the sider so you can always see where you are in the envelope. There’s also an end-of-cycle (EOC) output to send a pulse out at the end of every envelope. One nice feature that I’ve not seen before is that the CV controls over the segments can be normalised. That means you can control all parts of the ADSR from a single source of modulation.

There’s nothing particularly revolutionary going on here, but Nano Modules has put together a nicely featured ADSR that offers a lot of creative uses over the usual envelope shaping of filters and VCAs.

Only one comment is allowed per entrant, so please don’t post multiple times or we’ll have to disqualify you. Part 3 of our raffle closes Sunday 11th December at 23:59:59 GMT.

LEWITT Connect 6

The LEWITT Connect 6 offers a bunch of features ideally suited to streaming and podcasting applications. The interface has two XLR-1/4” combo inputs for microphones and instruments, each equipped with a preamp that delivers a whopping 72 dB of gain. In addition to this, you can hook up a stereo source to the 1/8” Aux input. There are three USB-C connectors in total – one for the computer, one for a phone, tablet, or second computer, and a third one for power – the CONNECT 6 charges mobile devices while connected. According to Lewitt, it’s possible to send and receive audio back and forth between your computer and phone. CONNECT 6 supports both iOS and Android devices.

The built-in DSP runs a software mixer that lets you combine microphones with audio from a computer, mobile device, or another input. In addition to three virtual stereo channels, there’s loopback channel for capturing audio from a Zoom call, game, or similar computer-based sources. You can create two independent audio mixes, e.g. one for monitoring and a different one for sending to streaming software.

For the full lowdown on the Connect 6, check out our full feature from October.

The Top 5 Best Amp Modellers for live and studio is our roundup of the virtual amp rigs you should consider for your guitar rig. Taking raw DSP power and turning it into an ultra-believable amp-like feel and tone. In this modern age we are spoilt for choice, so which ones should you consider?

Top 5 Best amp modellers for live and studio

Thankfully, the world of virtual guitar amps is just getting better and better. In terms of portability, flexibility and ease of use, both live and in the studio, they are hard to beat. The modelling amp is one of the greatest pieces of modern-day guitar gear and with so many great systems on offer it can be hard to work out which one is best for you.

This roundup takes the five we are currently most impressed by. We have marked them on reliability, sound quality, ease of use and flexibility. Plus, are they receiving regular updates and will they handle the rigours of touring?

Many modern-day amp modellers include the ability to use Impulse Responses which can make them a go-to piece of gear in the studio for when you want to record. The formats available now are both varied and useful for different scenarios, so we have included a few different types for you to look at.

The list is not definitive, as we wanted to distil it down to the ones we think will offer some of the best value for different situations and at various price points.

Be sure to let us know your favourite modelling and virtual amplifiers in the comments section below and why you like them.

Line 6 Helix

The Line 6 Helix is possibly one of the most popular modelling amplifiers on the market, plus it has regular updates that make it hard to beat. It has an easy-to-use interface and a slew of handy input and output connections, which make it a joy to use.

Line 6 Helix

Line 6 Helix

Live & Studio

The Helix system is perfect for live work, as it is built around a solid metal chassis. It is also the perfect studio tool, with many great user patches available online, which cover a wealth of great guitar and bass tones.

Below is the Thomann bundle which includes the official Line 6 Helix Backpack that makes it easy to transport to venues. Plus, there are many versions of it available now including the Helix Rack *, Helix LT *, HX Stomp and HX Stomp XL *. Making the Helix family a great place to start for amp modelling and virtual effects setups.

Neural DSP Quad Cortex

Next up is the relatively new Neural DSP Quad Cortex and this compact floor unit offers some very powerful DSP processing that includes 2 GHz dedicated DSP from the Quad-Core SHARC architecture.  Again, this system has regular firmware updates and is also built like a tank, making it worthy of this list.

Neural DSP Quad Cortex

Neural DSP Quad Cortex

Power

The system is a very powerful processor and as it is one of the latest modelling amp systems to be released, it should be pretty powerful for a very long time. It is one of the more expensive units, but the bang for your buck cannot be denied, as it covers so many bases.

Kemper Profiler Stage

The Kemper Profiler Stage system takes snapshots of real amplifiers called ‘Profiles’ and uses these to give players an amp-like experience. The Kemper family of products is similar to the Line 6 Helix, in that it comes in many formats. The Profiler Stage is one of the newest iterations and places the system in an easy-to-use floor pedal format. Though they do it as a rack * or as a head * if you prefer those formats.

Kemper Profiler Stage

Profiles

The way that it can capture essentially the DNA of any guitar amp is its greatest strength and puts it in a unique position amongst this bunch of amp modellers. Certainly, one to check out if you have access to some nice amps.

Boss GT-1000

The Boss GT-1000 is their top-of-the-line floor modeller and is packed with great features and is based around 32-bit/96 kHz processing. It also works for both guitar and bass, so it is pretty flexible. Having Bluetooth control for wireless editing of iOS and Android devices is also a really handy benefit for many musicians.

BOSS GT-1000 Guitar Multi-effect

BOSS GT-1000 Guitar Multi-effect

It’s Quick

Both amps and effects can be routed in numerous series and parallel combinations, plus it has very fast patch switching and delay carryover. Having the ability to use it as a USB audio and MIDI interface for computer-based recording and editing is also a key feature for many users. Making it perfect for stage and studio.

Having access to all those classic Boss effect algorithms is also a massive bonus with this one.

Mooer GE150

Finally, the Mooer GE150 is the perfect amp modeller for players on a restricted budget, but who need more flexibility and amp models. This compact floor pedal includes everything you need to record with and play live.

It could well be the cheapest on this list, but don’t let that put you off as it is packed with great features.

Functionality

This little floor pedal includes 55 amps, 26 cabinets and 151 effects built-in, which makes it pretty flexible. It also supports third-party Impulse Responses, so you can tailor it to your tastes.  I like that even at this price point it still includes USB connectivity for use as a recording interface to your DAW.

In fact, this little aluminium box has plenty going for it and it is certainly one to check out.

TAL-Reverb-4 is one of the most popular freeware reverbs, and it just got a big update! This week’s collection of the best free plugins also brings you an emulation of the Moog Little Phatty and a dual filter with plenty of distortion.

TAL Software TAL-Reverb-4

TAL-Reverb-4 Free pluginTAL-Reverb-4 has been making lists of the best free reverb plugins for years. So it’s great news indeed that the developer has just given the classic a big update! Besides a wonderful new GUI, TAL-Reverb-4 has received a new tune control for shimmering reverbs, a dampener, and ducking. They’ve also improved the overall quality of the reverb, so it doesn’t take a scientist to predict that TAL-Reverb-4 will remain a freeware favorite for years to come.

TAL-Reverb-4 is available for macOS 10.9 or higher (including M1), Windows 7 or higher, and Linux in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP formats.

Bedroom Producers Blog Dirty Filter Plus

Dirty Filter PlusHere’s another great update. Dirty Filter Plus by Bedroom Producers Blog improves upon the original by adding four distinct distortion modes. In addition to tube distortion, you can now choose from acid-style distortion, lo-fi dust, and bitcrushing. Besides the new distortion modes, BPB has added separate slope controls for the high-pass and low-pass filters. Moreover, the GUI is now resizable. A very cool and versatile filter plugin that’s just gotten even better!

Dirty Filter Plus is available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, and AU formats.

Infected Sounds Littl3-P

Littl3-PWhile the Little Phatty never reached the popularity of other Moog synths (mainly due to its lack of knobs), it paved the way for modern classics like the Sub 37. Infected Sounds Littl3-P is an emulation of the Little Phatty with a knob-laden GUI, three LFOs, an additional envelope, built-in effects, additional filter modes, an 8-voice unison engine, and other improvements. The software synth comes with 100 presets to jump-start your creativity. Great stuff!

Littl3-P is a VST/VST3 plugin for Windows.
