Two classic reverbs, the Universal Audio EMT 250 and EMT 140, are now available natively in your DAW, without the need for the UA Apollo DSP hardware.
It may be hard to believe, but these two legendary reverb plugins have been enjoyed by users of Universal Audio’s DSP platforms for the best part of two decades, and they are now available to native users too.
Universal Audio EMT 250 and EMT 140
Although only two digits separate these two legendary reverbs in name, they are fundamentally different in their makeup. While the EMT 140 is an electromechanical moving steel plate reverb from 1957, the EMT 250 was one of the first-ever algorithmic digital reverbs to become commercially available in 1976.
Naturally, they also have different sound characteristics, and therefore, they are used in different applications or on different projects from a stylistic point of view. The EMT 140 has a dense sound that ranges from warm to slightly metallic, adding its own unique colour tone to any sound. This makes it particularly useful on vocals, guitars, and snare drums.
The EMT 250, on the other hand, is actually a multi-effects unit with additional algorithms such as chorus, delay, echo, and phaser. Being digital, the EMT 250 reverb is far more versatile than the EMT 140, and its wide, transparent sound allows you to expand the stereo image of any sound in your mix. You can create the bread-and-butter 1980s reverb effects like vocal verbs and gated drums, but then you can also take a more ambient approach.
Because the wet and dry signals can become almost indistinguishable on certain sounds, the EMT 250 is also ideal for creating massive synth pads that are still commonly used in modern music production. With the simple set of controls on both of these reverbs, you can quickly dial in sounds that suit the style of your mix.
