Yamaha tease a ghostly digital workstation called Genos
“Genos is coming soon” is what it says on the video. Yamaha are having a go at being mysterious with a handful of “coming soon” videos spread over the month of September. The Genos welcomes us to “the new world of Digital Workstation” which is not the most understated tag line.
In the video we have hands playing an invisible piano in space. Star dust, moved by the music, swirls and begins to pick out the form of the mystical instrument. What emerges is something that resembles many of Yamaha’s current keyboard range. Could it be an arranger keyboard like the Tyros 5, or maybe it’s more of a synthesizer like the Montage or MOXF? Either way we have a keyboard, with a screen in the centre, a row of knobs and sliders and a bunch of buttons. All very familiar. But it also appears to have light up keys, like with the Native Instruments S-series keyboard controllers, and a rather nicely curved form and what could be a whole load of ins and outs on the back.
Yamaha have struggled to find their way in the resurgence of authentic synthesis and future-retro hardware. Maybe the workstation is what they do best and where they should be spending their time. It may not be as cool as the monosynth, analogue or modular markets but they certainly serve a purpose to many people who want everything in the one keyboard.
There have been rumours about the Genos knocking around for some time, along with a few mock-up images, but nothing that quite matches what we can pull from this video. There will be another tease video on the 15th, 22nd and 29th of September with the big reveal happening on the 2nd of October.
