Plugin Alliance has announced SILO by Unfiltered Audio. Designed for “rich and even otherworldly reverb sounds”, SILO uses granular processing to create reverbs and motion effects unlike anything else.

Unfiltered Audio SILO

While SILO by Unfiltered Audio is a reverb, it’s not meant for your run-of-the-mill rooms, concert halls and cathedrals. Instead of simulating real-world spaces, it combines a reverb engine with granular processing to create spatial environments that can completely transform your audio. Add some motion to them, and you’ve got a reverb that looks like a sound designer’s dream. If you’re into plug-ins like Output Portal or Puremagnetik Zerone, this one should be right up your alley.

According to Unfiltered Audio, SILO breaks up the incoming audio signal into small grains, which are then processed individually. Like a granular synthesizer, SILO allows you to adjust the grain size and shape and experiment with their speed, pitch, direction and spread. The developer says that by using automated rules to process individual grains separately, you can create acoustic spaces that sound unlike any traditional reverb.

Five spatializer modes

The plug-in also offers several ways to set the effect in motion, which allows you to create moving, three-dimensional spaces. The Spatializer section features five distinct movement algorithms, most of which are inspired by cosmic themes: Comets, Moons, Meteors, Stars and Shimmer. These are designed to function like a multi-dimensional autopanner. The reverb becomes an integral part of the sound design process, rather than just adding a simulated physical space.

For further sound shaping, SILO offers an integrated multi-mode filter, as well as an onboard compressor and maximizer.

Unfiltered Audio says that they’ve optimized the GUI to give you a maximum of control over the various processes, while still retaining a straightforward interface. There’s still a lot going on compared to most other reverb plug-ins. But experimentation is key in SILO, and you can customize the color theme to your liking. The plug-in comes with a collection of presets by renowned mixing engineers and sound designers, including Richard Devine.

Price and compatibility

Unfiltered Audio SILO is now available from Plugin Alliance for USD 129.99. After the introductory period, the price will increase to USD 179. The plug-in is included in Plugin Alliance’s MEGA, MIX & MASTER and Unfiltered Audio bundles at no extra cost.
