Unfiltered Audio TAILS

The idea behind TAILS by Unfiltered Audio is to create clean, shimmering reverb tails without any dissonant notes or distracting transients. Think of huge, expansive soundscapes derived from the input signal, but without any metallic hits or dissonant notes that might disturb the sound of the reverb.

To achieve this, Unfiltered Audio and BT have come up with a combination of techniques. Whenever the plug-in detects dissonances or transients in the input signal, it automatically ducks the signal to remove them. At the same time, it switches to its “polytonal dual buffer” to make up for the loss, replacing transients with washes of clean reverb.

Unfiltered Audio says that TAILS can even detect incoming transients ahead of time and pre-duck them to prevent them from cluttering up the reverb. As a result, the plug-in produces reverb tails that are unusually smooth and harmonic.

Four reverb engines

Furthermore, TAILS includes a choice of four reverb algorithms, each with its own distinct character. Besides the DEEP and RENOUN modes from BYOME, the plug-in offers the SPATIAL mode from SILO. In addition to this, TAILS includes a new SHIMMER mode tuned to BT’s specifications, Unfiltered Audio says.

Along with the unique reverb engines, TAILS offers a comprehensive set of MIDI features. For example, you can mute the buffer via MIDI to create rhythmic effects or align the reverb with other elements of your mix. The plug-in also supports the mod and pitch wheels for real-time control.

The developer claims that despite its impressive features, TAILS is light on your CPU, using less than 1% CPU on an M1 Macbook Air. Consequently, you can absolutely slap it on a bunch of tracks without having to worry about redlining your CPU.
