The Solaris shimmer reverb by Adam Szabo is without a doubt one of the best free plugins to come out of this year’s KVR Developer Challenge. The same goes for Wave Breaker by Press Play – a fantastic free limiter with excellent visualization. And then there’s ForkHz by Callybeat, an intriguing parametric EQ with step modulation.

Adam Szabo’s entry for this year’s KVR Developer Challenge gives Valhalla Supermassive a run for its money. Solaris is a fantastic shimmer reverb plugin for Windows that takes your audio straight to another dimension. The Chorale and dual Shimmer effects work their magic to transform simple audio tracks into endless soundscapes and complex, sparkling, otherworldly textures that’ll have you clinging to your seat. As of now, Solaris is only available for Windows, which is a real pity.

Press Play Wave Breaker

Quite honestly, I think that Wave Breaker by Press Play is one of the best free limiter plugins I’ve ever seen. Besides intuitive controls, this transparent-sounding true-peak look-ahead limiter features a comprehensive, incredibly responsive visualizer that really keeps you in the know about what’s going on. You can choose between peak-level normalization or manual gain compensation, and also apply a bit of saturation for good measure. This is a free plugin I’d pay for in an instant.

Wave Breaker is available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, and AU formats.

Callybeat ForkHz

ForkHz by Callybeat is a parametric equalizer with a twist. Sure, you can use its 10 bands and additional filters for normal (boring) equalization tasks. But the real fun starts when you discover ForkHz’s step modulation features. Draw in step modulation sequences with up to 64 steps for five parametric bands, the filters, gain, and pan, and EQing suddenly becomes a creative tool that can turn your audio tracks into intriguing rhythmic textures. I’d love to see ForkHz in a Mac version.
