As if in direct response to my moans about the Mother-32 and Mavis not being able to sit next to each other in a Moog 104 hp Eurorack case, well, now they can.

When Moog released the little Mavis synthesizer, we marvelled at the sound and the adorableness while pondering why Moog has decided to break with their own convention and put the patch bay on the left. All of the 60HP synths, like the Mother-32, DFAM and Subharmonicon, had their patch bays on the right. Some reviewers suggested that it was so you could sit the Mavis with a Mother-32 in a 104HP case.

This was true, however, as I pointed out in my review of the Mavis, it won’t work in the Moog 104 HP case because, as they are unpowered, you’d need a 4HP power module. It appears that Moog has woken up to this issue and is now releasing the same 104 HP and 60 HP Eurorack cases but with internal power supplies that connect at the back. Therefore, there’s no need for an HP-stealing power module in the front, so you can now happily sit a Mother-32 and a Mavis side by side and enjoy the convenience of having their patch bays aligned.

So, this is my fault – you’re welcome!

I have four of the original 104 HP cases, and they are really good. Simple, competent and look beautiful when mounted in the 2 or 3-tier brackets. They have sliding nuts which are not to everyone’s taste but have always worked fine for me. Having internal power is really very helpful. You get 10 power sockets on the bus board, which is probably just enough for a 104 HP row. The power connection is on the back of the case, along with a switch. It doesn’t specify if there’s a DC pass-through in order to be able to power more than one row from a single wall wart. Someone forgot to take a photo of the back.

I have no pricing at the moment, but the original 104 HP cases are just under £100, and the 60HP ones are £89. A power supply is likely to add £100, but we shall see.

Dust covers

Along with the case update, Moog has also come up with some handsome-looking dust covers. There’s one for the Matriarch, the Grandmother, and then for the two and three-tier 60 HP setups.

They are water repellant made from rugged Ballistic Cordura and have an ultra-soft interior. You also don’t need to worry about your patch as they are designed to be roomy.

No prices on these yet either, but I’m sure that information will be forthcoming.
