During a SonicScoop MixCon event sponsored by iZotope, Frank Filipetti took the audience through his mixing chain, where a yet un-released George Massenburg plug-in was seen. The event was published on SonicScoop’s YouTube channel where, thankfully, the part Frank talks about the DRC2 plug-in hasn’t been cut. Could this be the ultimate compressor plug-in and when it’s released?

In the video below, we get the first glimpse of George Massenburg’s latest creation. The legend that is engineer and producer George Massenburg needs little introduction, having won multiple Grammy Awards. His credits include: Earth, Wind and Fire, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Little Feat, Journey, Toto, Weather Report, Kenny Loggins, Herbie Hancock, Lyle Lovett, Aaron Neville, The Dixie Chicks, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Besides his hardware developments, his MDW EQ plug-in is probably one of his greatest technical achievements. I used to have the MDW EQ plug-in on an old Pro Tools HD TDM system and miss it greatly. In fact, it was only the other day that I mentioned it to a colleague so perhaps I need to get the Native version. For many years it was my go-to EQ plug-in and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This all adds up to how significant and exciting this potential release is. The currently named ‘DRC2’ plug-in, looks like it will an accompanying compressor for the MDW EQ plug-in, albeit this may only be a working title. We get the impression from the video that George has been sitting on this one for a while, only letting his closest friends use it ‘behind-the-scenes’. There’s not many accurate facts around this compressor at the moment, considering the version Frank is using is likely to be a beta version.
Just looking at the GUI on the video, the only assumptions we can deduce are a possible combination of peak and RMS style detectors. It also shows a ‘BS1770’ filter, which also refers to a type of loudness measurement algorithm. This doesn’t surprise me as a plug-in compressor’s success, will always hinge on how well it reacts to incoming signals. If there are multiple detector algorithms, then these might be arranged in parallel, series or via side chains. Could this be an all-round compressor with many colours of compression available, making it suitable for mixing and mastering applications? I’m certainly very intrigued.
