The new Keeley Super Phat Mod Full Range Overdrive is basically a refined and redesigned Boss BD-2. Robert Keeley was well known for improving on existing guitar pedals, and this one started out life many years ago as an upgrade for a standard Boss overdrive pedal.
Keeley upgraded internal pedal components and re-sell them as an improved version of the originals. Nothing wrong with that at all, and I have owned many of these pedals over the years. Along with companies like AnalogMan, this has always been a great way to improve an existing effect pedal design and make it, say, less noisy, or improve response or sensitivity, or example.
The Keeley Super Phat Mod Full Range Overdrive is hand-built in the USA, so I would expect higher quality than pedals mass-produced in Taiwan. This could be one to check out if you want a versatile overdrive with an already proven heritage.
The humble Boss BD-2 Blues Overdrive is popular in its own right. His new drive combines all his many upgrades to the BD-2 in the form of the Super Phat Mod Full Range Overdrive pedal. It uses specially selected JFETs and has, allegedly, been designed to be very good at picking up all the subtle nuances of your playing style.
I would suggest having a look at the two videos below of the Keeley Super Phat Mod Full Range Overdrive and seeing if you like the results yourself, or if it’s all just hype. There are already a lot of overdrive pedals on the market, but at least you know where this one has its heritage based upon!
