A TR-707 clone? Well, not quite. Although it looks alike, the RD-765 isn’t just trying to revive the classic digital drum machine from the mid-1980s. Instead, Behringer has built on this celebrated blueprint, with additional modern features and a collection of 126 sounds from the TR-707, TR-727, and TR-505 drum machines.

With the RD-765, you aren’t limited to using the built-in drum sounds, because you can load your own from your computer with the help of the SYNTHTRIBE App, or you can sample new sounds on the spot. Then, once you’ve created a kit you like, you can choose between 144 factory preset patterns or program your own with the flexible 64-step pattern sequencer.

More Information

The sequencer gives you per-step control over microtiming and step position, as you can nudge individual steps back and forth on the grid for a more organic feel. Also, each drum voice sequencer lane can use a different pattern length, allowing you to quickly create patterns with a polyrhythmic feel. The grid division value can also be adjusted from its default 1/16 setting to 1/8, 1/8 triplet, 1/16 triplet, or 1/32.

In addition, the sequencer also has generative and performance features such as per-step probability value, note repeat, step repeat, flam, and auto fill. When the drum pattern is running, you can also record your movements with the filter into the pattern, or use per-step filter cutoff values using the sequence menu. To get the RD-765 to work more like a sampler, there is a chromatic editing mode.

This turns the 16 pads into a chromatic keyboard, while Step mode lets you adjust the pitch on a per-step basis for more precise programming. Besides the analog filter, there is also the Wave Designer section with transient shaping capabilities, and a per-voice bitcrusher effect which can recreate the crunchy 12-bit sound of vintage digital drum machines, or delve into chiptune territory.
