Charvel has announced a brand new signature model for Gojira’s Joe Duplantier, a French player known for his crushing, giant monster riffs. This new guitar looks like it could level whole cities.
Okay, enough Godzilla references already! What we have here is a dual-humbucker Telecaster-shaped instrument in white with an ebony fretboard. The overall look is utilitarian. It’s basically a Charvel Signature Pro-Mod San Dimas model but with a tune-o-matic style bridge.
It’s fitted with two Duncan Designed HB humbucking pickups, the HB-10N in the neck position and the HB-10B at the bridge. The pickups are controlled with a simple volume knob and single three-way switch for pickup selection. That means this guitar is laid out for those of us that just want to play and not worry too much about fiddling with knobs.
I like that they have put the truss-rod access via a thumbwheel adjustment at the base of the neck, as it makes for easy setups. The guitar has locking tuners, so with that hard tail, tuning should be easy.

They have chosen nato wood for both the body and the neck, although the neck is strengthened with graphite rods as well. The neck is oil-finished and the ebony fretboard is a 12″-16″ compound radius with 22 jumbo frets. The neck/heel joint is also really well done on the guitar and gives good access to the higher frets.
Overall, I really like the whole look of the guitar, especially given the price, which is astounding for a signature guitar. I would recommend watching the video below to hear Joe talking about how he selected the guitar’s features, and giving you a few examples of his playing style.
