Alto Professional has announced the introduction of the TS3 series powered subwoofers. The TS318S and TS315S are designed to complement the TS3 series full-range speakers and extend their bass response.

At prices of around USD 500-600, the Alto Professional TS315S and TS318S are pretty affordable. In this price range, they compete with offerings like the db Technologies Sub 615 and Sub 618 and are considerably cheaper than the HK Audio L Sub 1500A and 1800A, while providing more power. What else do the new Alto subs have going for them?

Wood composite enclosures

Both of the new subwoofers feature long-excursion woofers in ported enclosures made from a dense wood composite. Alto Professional claims that the material has “virtually perfect acoustic characteristics”. According to the press release, the wooden enclosure is less prone to vibrations, which means that less of the driver’s energy is wasted as cabinet resonance, Alto says.

To ensure a good blend with the companion speaker, the Alto Professional TS3 series subs have six selectable DSP output modes. Four modes are tuned to the Alto TS2 and TS3 full-range speakers. The other two modes (high pass / bypass) are meant for matching the TS3 subs to other companion speakers.

18” and 15” models

The only difference between the TS318S and the TS315S is the size of the woofer. As the names suggest, it is 18 inches for the TS318S and 15 inches for the TS315S. This results in a weight of 86.4 lbs / 39.2 kg for the TS318S and 78.5 lbs / 35.6 kg for the TS315S. Everything else is identical.

Both subwoofers feature 3-inch high-temperature voice coils. The class D amplifiers put out 1000 W continuous and 2000 W peak power. Alto says that the amplifiers have proprietary limiting circuits for clip, thermal, and overload protection.

Connectivity

At the back, the TS3 series subwoofers feature two XLR-1/4” combo inputs, and two XLR outputs for the companion speakers. There is a selector switch for the six DSP output modes, a polarity reverse switch, an Extended LF switch, and a volume control.

Price and availability

Alto Professional says that the TS3 series subwoofers will be available in Q2 of 2019. The company states a price of USD 499 for the TS315S, and USD 599 for the TS318S.
