If Pultec-style EQ’s are your thing because of their very ‘musical’ behaviour, then you’ll want to keep an eye out on these new plugs. Coming soon from Black Rooster Audio are these great looking vintage emulations, the VHL-3C and VEQ-5. And what’s more, the VHL-3C will be free.
Black Rooster Audio VHL-3C and VEQ-5 Plug-ins
There are a few Pultec EQ plug-ins floating around, with the UAD version being unsurprisingly popular. Around this time last year, we also saw Ignite Amps release a free version of the same hardware, which has been received well. Check out Jef’s article here. Due to the nature of the original hardware and how old some of these units can be, it should be expected that each emulation will of course sound very different.
Perhaps you haven’t had much experience with a Pultec EQ, or some may be put off by the apparent lack of control in this digital era. However, that’s the magic here. These types of EQ are highly rated, not only for the sound they introduce with passive electronics, but the subtle and interesting EQ curves they introduce.
If the pricing information below is correct, then this looks like a really fun and potentially useful mixing tool for anyone. Even if you already have another Pultec style EQ plug-in. Black Rooster Audio appear to be releasing some great products at the moment and I look forward to trying these out.

According to the Gearslutz forum, the VHL-3C will be free, which is very generous. The VEQ-5 will have an introductory offer of 39 USD, eventually rising to it’s regular price of 79 USD. We expect these to be released in 2 to 3 weeks; who knows why they’re not available now. Are Black Rooster Audio just trying to tease us?!
