The ThorpyFX Scarlet Tunic is essentially Selmer Treble and Bass 50 in a pedal. The same amp that Syd Barrett is famous for using with Pink Floyd in the early days.

Scarlet Tunic

ThorpyFX developed the Scarlet Tunic to mimic the Selmer Treble and Bass 50 amp. Adrian Thorpe, the pedals designer, describes it as an analogue amp emulator. He was asked to develop the pedal by Lee Harris the guitar player in Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets so that he could sound authentic whilst playing on the Saucerful of Secrets World Tour.

Not just a Selmer

To recreate those early Pink Floyd tones, the Selmer amp was paired with the Hiwatt DR103 and Vox AC30 style tones as well. It is fitted with a high-quality transformer so that the pedal reacts to your playing and distorts like a full-size amplifier. Think of this pedal as being more like an amp’s preamp, rather than as a regular overdrive pedal.

Three Switches on the Scarlet Tunic

Controls

The Master increases the volume output of the pedal. This balances with the gain knob and sensitivity switch. Gain is used to add drive and goes from lightly crispy through to full-on amp saturation. The scope of this control is affected by the sensitivity switch. It also has Treble and Bass controls, plus Presence which affects the upper-mids response of the pedal.

Then you have three switches.

  • Deep: Changes the bass character of the pedal and is like a master bass control.
  • Bright: Changes the brightness of the pedal and is like a master highs control.
  • Sens: Changes the gain character of the pedal and is like the 1/2 or hi/lo input jack option you find on old amps but with 3 gain levels.

Pink Floyd

The pedal does a very good job of recreating those vintage Pink Floyd amp tones. And as it is being used by Saucerful of Secrets you cannot get much better in terms of being as close as can be to a  vintage Selmer amp setup. Just this is a lot easier to find and to maintain, plus lighter to lug around. As ever ThorpyFX has made a truly unique effect with the Scarlet Tunic.
