US guitar pedal maker Stomp Under Foot has just announced that it’s shipping its new Full Powered Halo dual overdrive pedal. This unit is all about getting you close to those smooth, cranked amp-like vintage Fender as well as some heavier Marshall JCM tones. It follows the Alabaster, a fuzz pedal created in cooperation with the band All Them Witches.
Full Powered Halo
The new Full Powered Halo is a dual gain pedal that includes a modified, low-gain version of SUF’s Serenity Overdrive pedal and the popular Halo Bender distortion pedal.
Luckily gearmandude has done a rather good audio demo on his YouTube channel of the Full Powered Halo overdrive/distortion pedal. This is very valuable, as there are so many dual drive pedals on the market and it can be hard to choose between them all.
The Full Powered Halo consists of two halves, both with three controls apiece. The right side is the overdrive half of the equation and consists of knobs labelled Volume, Tone and Drive. This side is the smoother overdrive section with a tone approaching Fender amps that offers lighter gain tones.
The left side, of course, is the distortion half of the pedal and consists of three knobs labelled Volume, Tone and Dist. This half will get you into the far dirtier, JCM-style distortions.
The pedal design is simple and the layout is clean, so no manuals needed here. Just what you want from a drive pedal. Combine the two halves to add a third tone that will let you juice the distortion even further for, say, lead lines.
As with all its boxes, this Stomp Under Foot pedal is handmade in the USA by Matt Pasquerella. He uses a combination of NOS (New Old Stock), obsolete and even vintage parts, all are high-quality components and each pedal is hand wired throughout.
This type of boutique pedal building isn’t cheap, but I feel that Matt is making a great sounding pedal here for what I think is very reasonable money.
