SSL Odyssey: Yes, It Has Dynamics
The new instantly-recallable flagship SSL console.
The SSL Odyssey is the new flagship large-format mixing console with instant recall, scalable from 24 channels all the way up to 96 channels.
When SSL launched the Oracle console last year, despite being the first-ever console with instant recall, it was met with a deluge of complaints that it didn’t have per-channel dynamics processing. Well, SSL has topped this release with the Odyssey, which has all that and more. Let’s get into the details.
SSL Odyssey
Compared to the more compact Oracle, the Odyssey has several key differences that set it apart as the flagship. With a larger frame, the Odyssey has the space for its per-channel dual motorized fader system with 100mm large faders and 60mm small faders. This gives you control of your primary channel path, your monitor/return path, and DAW control via the O-Motion automation system.
Meanwhile, you can also swap the faders to give you more precise control over your monitor mixes. The center section of the Odyssey has also been expanded with native immersive audio/Dolby Atmos workflow hardware and up to 24 VCAs and 8 stereo group input faders, while still featuring THE BUS+ and Analogue Dynamic EQ bus processors.
In classic SSL style, the Odyssey has comprehensive dynamics on each channel with a compressor/limiter section that features different attack time modes, RMS/peak detection, and wet/dry mix controls for parallel processing. In addition, the expander/gate section has flexible operation modes with controls for threshold, release, range, and hold.
Like the Oracle, the Odyssey features the same PureDrive preamps with variable harmonic drive, switchable E and G series EQs, and the ActiveAnalogue system with its separate analogue processing racks that allow instant recall. Also, the same flexible features like per-tile controller assignment are carried over to the Odyssey.
