Plugin Alliance and Brainworx have announced the AMEK EQ 200 Mastering Equalizer, the first in what the company says will be a series of AMEK-branded plug-ins. The 7-band EQ aims to recreate the sound of famous parametric equalizers of the 70s and 80s by firms like GML and Sontec. It will be out on May 19th, 2020.

Plugin Alliance says that the AMEK EQ 200 plug-in was inspired by a GML 8200 EQ owned by Brainworx founder Dirk Ulrich. Each channel offers five wide, fully parametric bands with up to 15 dB boost or cut per band. The high and low bands can also operate as shelving filters. In addition, each channel has continuously variable low and high cut filters with a 12 dB/oct slope.

The five parametric bands offer an auto listen feature, which lets you audition changes in isolation. For a more analogue feel and tone, the AMEK EQ 200 offers variable THD.

The plug-in is available in stereo and mono versions. The stereo version offers some additional functionality which only applies to the dual-channel domain. This includes optional M/S processing, correlation and balance meters and a stereo width control. There’s also the “Mono Maker”, which sums low frequency content to mono for a focused bottom end. The developers have also included the Brainworx Tolerance Modeling Technology (TMT) for simulation of channel-to-channel variations of analogue components.

The Plugin Alliance AMEK EQ 200 certainly is a beautiful-looking mastering equalizer plug-in with a nice set of features. If it delivers the “surgical precision” and transparent sound the makers claim, it’s bound to become a popular alternative to competitors like the Softube Chandler Limited Curve Bender and others.

Price and compatibility

Plugin Alliance says that the AMEK EQ 200 Mastering EQ will come out on May 19th, 2020. From that date onwards, it will be included in the company’s MEGA bundle subscription at no extra cost. The MEGA bundle costs USD 24.99 / month or USD 299.88 / year, but the yearly plan is currently on sale for USD 249.99. The single purchase price of the plug-in hasn’t been announced yet.

System requirements haven’t been posted yet, but I think we can assume that the AMEK EQ 200 will be available for Windows and macOS in VST, VST3, AAX and AU versions like most of PA’s other plug-ins.

I think it will cost between 99-149 or something, which is not terribly bad price and more reasonable than launch price of Softube’s Curve Bender

Serene, it is also included in the $24.99/mo Mega Bundle, in fact every plugin is. You get $249.99 voucher if you pay upfront or get it after 12 months of subbing.
