Mixxx Is the Best DJ Software You’re Not Using – New Update Adds Even More Controller Mappings
Get started with the free and open-source DJ app now.
Mixxx is not only free, it’s one of the best DJ apps available, period. Update 2.4.2 adds even more controller mappings, making this open-source software an incredible DJ resource.
Mixxx Is the Best DJ Software You’re Not Using
Not too long ago, I wrote a story called Are DJ Subscriptions Out of Control? One of the solutions I proposed was to use free software, such as the community-supported open-source platform, Mixxx.
As the software has just been updated to version 2.4.2 and I haven’t written properly about it before, I thought I would take the opportunity to sling some digital ink about the best DJ software that you’re (probably) not using.
What Is Mixxx?
We tend to get locked into the fancy paid apps that all the pros use like rekordbox or Serato, but there are alternatives out there, like Mixxx. This software may be free but it’s incredibly full-featured. It supports up to four decks, has its own music management section, and offers hot cues, beat looping, keylock and Sync Lock.
There’s more. It has Sampler Decks, allowing you to layer up to 64 samples to trigger over your beats. There are also effects chains, with up to three at a time.
Oh, there’s even more. The free app supports iTunes, Traktor, Serato, and Rekordbox libraries plus MusicBrainz tag lookup.
It even offers built-in Shoutcast and Icecast servers. How cool is that?
Hardware Support
Another reason to use this great software is that it allows you to use pretty much whatever controller you want.
Out of the box, it provides hardware support for a ridiculous number of devices, including: Allen & Heath Xone:K2, Behringer BCD2000, DJ TechTools MIDI Fighter Classic, Evolution X-Session, Keith McMillen QuNeo, Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol F1, Nintendo Wiimote(!), Novation Launchpad MK2, Pioneer CDJ-2000, and on and on.
If your controller of choice isn’t on the list, chances are someone in the community has already mapped it for you.
The latest version of the software, 2.4.2, has also added the following controllers: Denon MC7000, Korg Kaoss DJ, Novation Dicer, Novation Launchpad X, Numark PartyMix and Scratch, Pioneer DDJ-400 and DDJ-FLX4, Reloop Beatmix 2/4, Mixage MK1 and MK2, and Sony SIXAXIS.

I really like Mixxx, but to be fair, all developers needs to up their game and release their apps on iPad aswell, even if it’s a slimmer version. I have a full CDJ setup in the studio that gives me the exact training I need for my gigs, but at home, I can take whatever controller and make it ”standalone”with my iPad and Djay Pro. But we need more app choices to choose from.
it’s the best app for mixing music
cant get it to work with my dj controller. i cant do mappings and whatever else needed im not computer savvy . i need it to automatically recognise the hardware
Hi I’m trying to get my N4 numark controller working on Mixxx but it’s not picking up. Can you advise me please thank you.
