Haken Audio has been designing synthesizers for 40 years now. Its Slim Continuum Fingerboards are beloved by musicians not only for their incredible control and expressiveness but also for their included EaganMatrix Sound Engine, a digital synthesizer that you can also find in the Expressive E Osmose instruments.
If you’ve been wanting to add a Continuum to your setup but have been turned off by the price, you’re in luck, as Haken Audio today announced a new – and affordable – entry to the lineup: the Slim21 Continuum.
Haken Audio Slim21 Continuum 21s8x
With the model number 21s8x, the Slim21 Continuum slots in alongside its bigger siblings, the Slim70 Continuum (70s8x) and Slim46 Continuum (46s8x). As the numbers suggest, the new Slim21 offers 21 half steps (how Haken Audio advertises its instruments), with nearly two octaves of the unique MPE+ keyboard, with each finger sensitive to pitch, pressure, and front-to-back position.
In terms of specs, the Slim21 is 45 x 19 x 3 cm (17.7 x 7.5 x 1.2 inches) in size, and weighs in at a very light and portable 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs). That makes it a great size and weight for taking on the go, or plopping down on a table next to another instrument, such as the piano in the demo video.

Aside from the Slim21’s very sensitive controller aspects, you also get that EaganMatrix Sound Engine inside, with its subtractive synthesis, physical modeling with modal filter banks, FM, and more.
Purchase also includes the Haken Editor, which lets you program the engine directly through a Mac or PC, or through one of an ever-growing number of custom Overlays.
