The new Majella Compax is the Implexus’ little brother: a compact, patchable West Coast synth with a built-in sequencer.

Majella Audio has unveiled the little brother of the Implexus at Superbooth 26. The new Compax is a patchable desktop synth with the main building blocks of West Coast synthesis.
The design draws heavily from the Implexus. But the Compax isn’t just smaller (as the name suggests), it also does things a bit differently. For example, it lacks the filter, which provided a familiar East Coast element in the Implexus. Unlike the Implexus, however, the Compax has a patch panel with 20 patch points for internal modulation and interfacing with a modular system.
The main sound source is a complex oscillator, whose modulator offers continuously variable waveforms from square to triangle to sawtooth. In addition, there’s a noise generator, and you can run external signals through the synth. The Implexus’ second oscillator is missing, though.
For sound shaping, there’s a wavefolder, another key element of West Coast synthesis. It can be modulated by an envelope, LFO, or external signal.
Speaking of modulation: the Majella Compax offers an LFO with five waveforms, which can be synced to an external clock. Moreover, there are two West Coast-style rise-fall envelope generators.
The built-in sequencer is equipped with a single row of eight knobs and buttons, although the ‘Trig Row’ button suggests there might be a way to switch rows. We’ll update this article when we get all the details from our team on the ground in Berlin.
