King of FM is a free iOS app and AUv3 plugin that puts the sounds of the legendary DX7 at your fingertips. Also in this week’s collection of the best free plugins: The convolution-based spatial audio tool Place It and a reverb with a built-in high-pass filter.
Audiokit King of FM
King of FM by Audiokit is a sample-based standalone app and AUv3 plugin that packs more than 300 multisampled sounds from the classic FM synths of the 80s and 90s: DX7, DX7II, TX81z, and SY77. It’s the successor to the developer’s incredibly successful FM Player app, which reportedly gained the approval of Herbie Hancock. All in all, King of FM includes over 2 gigabytes of sounds (compressed to 400 MB) and a selection of built-in effects.
King of FM was mainly developed for iPhone and iPad, but the standalone version also runs on Apple Silicon Macs.

Soundly Place It
Soundly has pulled the Place It feature from its Voice Designer tool and made it available as a free plugin. Originally designed for use with Soundly’s sound FX libraries, Place It allows you to run your audio tracks through a selection of emulated speakers and place them in 40 different virtual environments. The plugin achieves this by means of a convolution engine and real-world impulse responses. A great tool to have in your arsenal – especially if you work in post production or sound design.
Place It is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
Bakno Audio Highpass Reverb
Highpass Reverb by Bakno Audio is just what it says: a reverb plugin with a built-in high-pass filter. With just three controls (room size, damping, and dry/wet), you can dial in a wide range of reverbs in seconds. The additional filter makes it easy to focus the effect on the higher frequencies, thereby keeping the low end uncluttered. Furthermore, Highpass Reverb offers a frequency analyzer that maps frequencies on a virtual keyboard, so you can see what you’re doing.
Highpass Reverb is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
