Gibson Tony Iommi Signature SG Special
Following on from the Custom Shop ‘Monkey’ SG limited run from last year, Gibson is been working on a USA-produced Gibson Tony Iommi Signature SG Special in a classic Vintage Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer finish – loaded with twin P-90 pickups! This latest version was inspired by Iommi’s modified 1964 Gibson SG model that he famously used throughout his career and in Black Sabbath.
Construction and Specifications
The construction consists of a lightweight mahogany body, with a bound mahogany neck and an Indian rosewood 12″ radius fretboard loaded with 22 medium jumbo frets and a Graphtech bone-coloured nut. You get the era-correct adjustable wraparound bridge and a set of Gibson’s P-90 single-coil pickups with chrome covers set in black pickup rings. Each has independent Volume and Tone controls, with Witch Hat knobs. A set of Grover Rotomatic tuners should keep everything nicely in tune. All you need now is to bring the riffs!
This model looks like a classic configuration for an Iommi-flavoured guitar. This could be a great way for fans to get their hands on one of his signature-styled SGs. Sure, it won’t appease the purists, but for anyone that wants to doom and get low down and heavy with their riffs, this SG should provide a solid platform for just that. Tony would always mod his own guitars anyway, so this is perfect for tinkering with, just as he always did.
One detail caught my eye. I like that the hardshell case includes a reproduction of Tony’s “Monkey” sticker. It’s a nice little touch. There is also a little Iommi signature on the rear of the headstock to let you know it is a signature model.
