With the Dangerous Music S&M 20th Aniversary Edition, 100 units of the Sum and Minus have been created by Dangerous co-founder Chris Muth. This “sum and difference” processor is capable of dividing the identical information within the stereo mix (L+R) and separating this from the differing signal elements between the two channels (L-R).
The Dangerous electronic sum and difference matrix allows you to adjust the width of the stereo image. Meanwhile, the boldly designated ENGAGE switch enables the sum and minus send and return circuitry.
The advantage of a processor like the S&M is that you can process the sum and minus information separately by applying different types and amounts of compression, EQ, and saturation.
This can help you achieve bolder more defined mixes and masters with depth and detail. In addition, you can correct inconsistencies or errors like vocal sibilance. Here, by using a de-esser on the sum channel you can then brighten the minus channel with EQ accordingly.
