D’Angelico Guitars swallows Supro and Pigtronix

Supro was originally founded in Chicago during the 1930s and was relaunched in 2013 with a huge launch at NAMM. Pigtronix main focus is as a boutique effects company with unique designs and some very popular effects pedals in the line up, like the recent Pigtronix Infinity 2 looper. D’Angelico, of course, is also a brand with a very long heritage, originally established in 1932. Both Supro and Pigtronix were previously owned by Absara Audio, located in Long Island, NY. “This is going to make all three brands even stronger,” D’Angelico CEO Brenden Cohen said in a press release. “I can’t wait for our customers to see what we have in store for them.” Sounds promising.

Dave Koltai, the former co-owner of Supro and Pigtronix will stay on as Chief Technology Officer, so the two brands should keep their own identities. His role will mean that he can will continue to design and develop both the brands, alongside D’Angelico’s Executive Vice President of Product Development, Ryan Kershaw. Here’s what Dave Koltai says about the acquisition:

The acquisition of Supro and Pigtronix by D’Angelico creates a trifecta … It’s a perfect fit, and I am thrilled to be able to continue making new gear for musicians around the world.

You can see Dave demoing the Infinity 2 below in the video at the bottom of this article. It’s comforting to know he will still be involved with these two brands going forward.

The merging of these three popular, New York brands makes perfect sense and it looks like it could be a winner. Hopefully, we will see all brands grow in the coming years and I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

I think it would be good if it brings the quality of Pigtronix mini pedals up. I bought one, and threw it in the garbage 4 months later due to a faulty pot. Too bad really as I loved the tones.
