We have all at some point tried to build a temporary vocal booth, at home or on location, with blankets and duvets. Recording budgets have spiralled downward, and as more professionals become self-sufficient, even recording at home. And having a purpose-built recording booth isn’t always available. Most of the time you try to create a dead space which is more conducive to recording. If you’re on location, there may be some background noise that needs minimising. VocalBoothToGo have just released some new products exactly for these scenarios and I’m sure they’ll prove very popular.

Released at Summer NAMM 2016 last weekend, VocalBoothToGo has been derived from blankets that were initially used by removal companies. Using a denser material, they have started manufacturing acoustic blankets, which have now been developed further into a range of complete recording booths.

They are easily erected almost anywhere for either creating an acoustically dead environment, or for reducing background noise. I love this idea as it provides us with a mobile solution which is fit for purpose, and more professional than a couple of old duvets. I can see engineers who record on location carrying these, or for those recording podcasts in a noisy office environments, or even as a semi-permanent solution for home-recordists. This product is ideal for the current market and how the industry is currently operating.

There’s no technical information about how effective the sound proofing version actually is, but it’s almost not important. In many situations it will be a case of better with, rather than without. There are 3 sizes available; 3′ x 3′, 3′ x 6′ and 6′ x 6′. Whilst this offers 3 very useable options, apparently only the 3′ x 3′ can fit inside their travel bag and can even be taken on a plane as standard luggage. The other 2 would only work if transportation was available, which I think defeats the object of being mobile.

For more information visit the VocalBoothToGo website where the booths can already be ordered. The 3′ x 3′ booth is 945.25 USD, the 3′ x 6′ is 1,269.64 USD and the 6′ x 6′ is 1,499.69 USD. These are great prices for something that I think you might use more than you initially expect.
