There are loads of free frequency analyzers out there, but TDR Prism by Tokyo Dawn Records offers a level of refinement we rarely see in freeware. The frequency analyzer focuses on human audio perception to guide you to a great-sounding mix. The look of the high-resolution display is simply gorgeous, and you’ve got a choice of a wide range of tilting and weighting options to adapt the frequency plot to your requirements. Furthermore, TDR Prism offers support for sidechain inputs and external files, and it can link to other instances of itself. It even runs in full-screen mode on a separate monitor if you wish. Chances are you’re going to like this more than most paid analyzer plugins.

Ah, VHS! If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, the sound of worn-out videotape will send you straight down memory lane. There’s something about that sound that just screams nostalgia. Inspired by a technique used by Boards of Canada and numerous other artists, BPB Dirty VHS emulates the effect of recording audio to a VHS tape and then re-sampling it. You can choose from no less than eight different combinations of VCRs and VHS tapes, each with their own unique characteristics. Then add Noise, Dirt, and Chorus and play with the Pitch and Tone knobs to dial in the desired amount of inconsistencies and filtering. There’s even a Whammy mode for extreme pitch effects. Nice work!

Fuse Audio Labs VPRE-72
One look at this new freebie from Fuse Audio Labs and you know what it’s all about: VPRE-72 is of course an emulation of the iconic V72 preamp of the 1950s. This studio staple of a long-gone era was manufactured by Siemens, Maihak, and several other brands and later evolved into the V76 and eventually into the REDD.47 preamps used by the Beatles at Abbey Road Studios. Fuse Audio Labs says that the VPRE-72 plugin captures the authentic spirit of the original through faithful emulations of the transformers and the dual EF804 pentode circuit. Thanks to gain compensation, you can apply as much tube drive and saturation as you like without messing up your gain structure. They’ve also thrown in the high-cut and low-cut filters from the V76 for good measure. There’s even a grouping feature that lets you edit multiple instances of the plugin across several tracks. This is a free preamp you don’t want to miss!
