With foldable touchscreen devices becoming increasingly popular, it was only a matter of time before Apple became involved in one way or another. According to our usual suspects, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants, we can look forward to a new 20-inch Apple foldable by 2026. Previously there have been rumors surrounding foldable iPhone designs, but this is the first we’ve heard of something in the iPad or MacBook domain.
Apple’s foldable possibilities
The demand on the rise and Apple’s development of a foldable hybrid touchscreen device has been going on for a couple of years already. The idea is that the product will have a dual-purpose design for use as both a notebook and a tablet. There are conflicting reports, however, on whether or not the device will be designed with an integrated keyboard or not. A dual-screen design seems far more likely though, where the lower half functions as a keyboard would, which is closer to some of the other foldable designs we’ve seen on the market. At the proposed size, this foldable hybrid could be equipped with a UHD/4K or higher res. display.
A device of this nature could be an interesting prospect for musicians, both on stage or in the studio – especially considering how apps like Monterey’s Universal Control will develop over time. The Apple foldable development timeline is apparently set for 2026, which puts it in a similar timeframe to the Apple car and the long-awaited AR/VR glasses. 2026 is a long wait, but at least we are likely to see the new iPad Air and one new Mac in the lineup at the Apple event next week. We can hardly wait!
