Reliq is an everything-all-at-once type device that uses a 16×16 matrix to conjure up control, routing, sequencing and masses of modulation.

Reliq

It definitely looks like things we’ve seen before, but I’m not sure we’ve seen them all in the one package. Reliq throws up reflections of the Deluge, Circuit, OXI One, Polyend Seq, Ableton Push and many other backlit button-heavy machines. But this pulls together different aspects and wraps it up in a very interesting control surface.

Matrix Mixing

First of all, it’s a matrix mixer. The 16×16 grid opens up the routing of 16 analogue inputs to 16 analogue outputs. Just press a button to route any input to any output or combination thereof. You can store configurations and recall them on-the-fly or sequence them for extra adventures.

That’s probably enough of a product right there, especially with what looks like an OLED display across the top to show all the routings and other parameters. Details are a little thin on the ground at the moment.

Sequencing

Alternatively, you can use it as a 16-channel polyphonic sequencer with up to 8 voices per track. It becomes a pretty awesome matrix sequencer, so you can explore melody through the lighting of buttons. It has all sorts of rhythmic modes like Euclidian and Stochastic and there are all sorts of melody and pattern generation tools built in.

It has both analogue CV/Gate and MIDI facilities which have their own advantages depending on whether you like MIDI effects and MPE or envelopes and LFOs.

Modulation

Using the array of buttons, you can draw in your own waveforms for modulation. That’s a neat idea. You can also do this with CC numbers and MPE, and it already comes with LFOs and envelopes ready to go.

Control

And finally, it can do all the usual DAW control, clip launching and bits and pieces that we’ve come to expect from our controllers. It’s probably not its strongest feature though.

Connectivity

Reliq has lots of holes for plugging things in. There are 3 MIDI Outs, 1 MIDI In, USB-MIDI, USB-Host, 16 gates, 32 CV outs, Rest, Clock and the 16×16 audio in/out.

What is rather excellent is that all the analogue and CV connections can be piped to a Modular Breakout Box that sits in your Eurorack case. That’s amazing. I wonder whether these in/outs are also on the Reliq itself or only available via the Breakout Box. It does look like the Breakout can be run standalone, being powered by the Reliq so maybe that answers that question.

Launching soon

The website isn’t giving everything away just yet. There are no videos or demos and no release date other than “We’re launching soon”. If you sign up for updates you’ll discover that the price will be $1,699, but there will be a preorder discount. Reliq has signed up for Superbooth, so maybe that will be the first time we’ll see it in action.

Reliq looks impressive and could be an extraordinary central control, mixing, routing and sequencing hub for any studio. I’m looking forward to hearing more about it.

Yep signed up for this. Exactly what I was looking for. And at that VIP price, I think it’s a fair price. Looks like an MPE control surface as well, not just MPE modulation.

I think it’s an awesome and unique piece of technology. I guess I have no use for it, but I’m still very curious and would certainly want to know more.
