Mutuca is a beautifully made analog synthesizer from the Reco-Synth workshop of Arthur Joly in Brazil. It’s a perfectly balanced little monosynth.

Mutuca

Mutuca is Portuguese for horsefly which to me are horrible things but perhaps this is more of a nod to synths like the Wasp. But it’s probably not important.

This Mutuca is a beautiful looking hand-crafted synthesizer with the style of a VCS-3 about it and the fun and fruity vibe that Arthur is so fabulous at. It’s awesomely simple, gorgeously realised and would be the talking point of any space you place it in.

The synthesizer contains a single 3340 oscillator with 3 waveforms which you can switch in or out of the signal chain. There’s a single LFO with triangle or square shapes and a single ADSR envelope. The voltage-controlled low-pass filter has cutoff and resonance controls and can be modulated by both the LFO and envelope. The VCA can drone and also has the same modulation possibilities. At the output are a fabulous VU meter and level control.

The front portion of the synth has a push-button 1-and-a-half octave keyboard. You do also get a MIDI input on the back. Mutuca does exactly what you think it does but with an uncommon sense of presence. I love the joyfulness in Arthur’s work, it restores my faith in humanity and the wonder of synthesizers.

The price, including a hard case, is £464 plus shipping and import taxes and is available now.

Great writing Robin. And a great synth. And, whilst we’re at it, a great price? Brilliant stuff. This post – and synth – warmed my cockles.
