When it was introduced in 2018, the RevivalDRIVE immediately established itself as one of the leading “amp-in-a-box” effects. Slimming down on the original in size and price, the new RevivalDRIVE Compact has a slightly different approach, condensing those reams of knobs and controls to fit on a compact enclosure, with only six knobs instead of twelve.
Like the larger previous version, the RevivalDRIVE Compact is all about true amplifier overdrive. Origin Effects claims to have reproduced each stage of the signal path of a tube amp with purely analog components. Discrete, transistor-based circuits replace the tubes of valve amps.
A new function
Origin Effects says that development for the RevivalDRIVE Compact emphasised a simplified operating concept. The new Highs knob takes over the three different preamp voicing modes of the big brother, so that all are assigned to a single continuous controller.
This means that new intermediate settings are possible. The blend slider has also been reworked. Mixing in the clean sound reduces the gain at the same time. This should provide for some useful musical results.
While most overdrives work well with some amplifiers and less well with others, the built-in post-drive EQ seems a useful tool for adapting the tone to suit your amp. Overall, this pedal is an interesting take on the ‘full fat’ version of the RevivalDRIVE. The demo videos below sound pretty convincing.
