Another one?!? Not content with releasing a veritable barrage of new pedals over the last few weeks, Joyo has just announced the R-05 Maximum, a dual-channel drive pedal. This is the latest addition to its new R series which is turning into a serious alternative to established budget pedal brands like TC Electronic and Behringer.

The new Joyo R-05 Maximum drive pedal has two ‘sides’, offering a drive component and a handy footswitchable boost option. Two toggle switches adjust the tone: The left is marked Hard/Flat/Smooth and selects the brightness of the mids. The right one lets you choose between MOSFET and diode clipping.

Then you have four simple controls labelled Volume, Tone, Gain and Boost. It has the same ambient lighting feature as the rest of the R Series. This can be set to either always on or only on when the effect is actually engaged.

Cheap and useful?

The proof will be in how well this pedal works with your guitar’s pickups and how it kicks the front end of your amplifier’s preamp. The boost function is controllable on a separate footswitch, which could make this drive pedal a winner for many players.  But it will all be down to how it actually sounds, of course.

It is certainly cheap enough and comes in at less money than many of its competitors. But if it sounds good, the Joyo R-05 Maximum Drive could be a success. It will have lots of appeal to those on a restricted budget looking for a cheap alternative drive channel for a basic guitar amp setup.
