The legendary Fairchild 660 and 670 compressors are among the most sought-after pieces of vintage studio gear, and only a select few will ever have the chance of owning one. Even modern recreations like the Mighty Fairchild Reissue and the considerably more affordable Heritage Audio Herchild Next Gen are far out of reach for many of us. Just a few days ago, Softube released the Bus Processor 670. But it gets even more affordable: Analog Obsession, purveyor of fine free audio plugins, has set out to recreate the sound of the Fairchild 660 in a free plugin.

MuChild has all the essential controls of the original – Input, Threshold, and Time Constant – and then some. In addition to a DC knob that affects the ratio and knee, the plugin offers a sweepable sidechain highpass filter up to 1 kHz. There’s also an external sidechain input, as well as a Mix knob for blending the wet and dry signals. If you’re after the iconic Fairchild sound, MuChild is clearly a must-have!

MuChild is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.

Following up on DSS-130SE, DAWJunkie has released yet another free plugin inspired by a garage sale favorite from the ‘80s – the Casio MT-600. Perfect for adding instant retro vibes to your productions!

According to the developer, all sounds were sampled directly from an original unit. You can further shape the sounds using an ADSR envelope, a resonant filter, and three effects (Crunch, Delay, Reverb). The plugin comes with 50 presets.

DT-600 Mini is available for macOS and Windows in VST, AU, and AAX formats.

FLTRS-LE by MNTRA Instruments is a free teaser for the developer’s powerful FLTRS plugin ($79). While the full version comes with a whopping 37 filter types, FLTRS-LE is limited to just one algorithm: a component-level recreation of the iconic Roland Jupiter-6 filter circuit.

More Information

According to MNTRA, the plugin faithfully recreates the behavior of the original, including the component tolerances and subtle nonlinearities that define the lively sound of the Jupiter-6. They’ve even added a bunch of features like negative resonance, a parallel band-split path, stereo detune, and vintage aging drift.

FLTRS-LE is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
