Martin has added two Brazilian Burst Special models to its X Series: the Dreadnought D-X2E and the Auditorium-bodied 000-X2E. Both stick to the series formula with a solid spruce top, HPL back and sides, and Martin E-1 electronics, but these models add a beautiful satin Vintage Burst top.
The Better Looks of the X Series
Martin launched the X series in 1998 alongside the DXM, with two key selling points: the use of alternative materials instead of increasingly scarce tonewoods, and making a full-size Martin more affordable for players who would never spend the money on a Standard Series model.
High-pressure laminate, which, in essence, is compressed wood fibre with a printed, textured surface, achieved both aims, and Martin patented its use in acoustic guitar bodies.
With the 2024 revision, the necks were then made from select hardwood, the fingerboard edges were beveled, the string spacing was reworked, and the bridge was given a sloped contour. Most significantly of all, Martin dropped the third-party preamp in favor of its own E-1 system across the range.
D-X2E Brazilian Burst Special
This new Brazilian Burst Special color is another step in the direction of making the X series more visually appealing. Apart from the body, the two acoustics are almost identical: the Dreadnought has a 645 mm scale, while the 000 has a shorter 632 mm scale.
Beyond that, the spec sheets are pretty much the same. To start with, you get a solid spruce top with this new satin Vintage Burst. The back and sides are made of Brazilian rosewood pattern HPL, and the neck, fingerboard, and bridge are made of select hardwood. Still the core ingredients of the X series.
The D-X2E’s bracing is Martin’s scalloped X pattern; and both guitars’ nut is made of white Corian and measures 45 mm.
Beautiful looks and sounds
In terms of visual enhancements, the D-X2E and the 000-X2E offer even more than the Brazilian Burst. For instance, a single-ring faux abalone rosette encircles the soundhole, the fretboard features faux mother-of-pearl diamonds and squares instead of the standard plain dots, and the headstock displays Martin’s block logo rather than the customary script.
In terms of electronics, you get Martin’S E-1, which has a chromatic tuner, as well as volume, tone and phase controls.
Price and availability
Both, the D-X2E* (Sweetwater*) and the 000-X2E* (Sweetwater*) can be ordered now. A soft-shell case is included, as is the case across the series.
