JOYO are based in China and make cheap pedals, which often get re-branded by other companies. The introduction of the Jam Buddy is something new and quite unique, and is squarely aimed at those spending lots of time practising or finding themselves on a tight budget.
This new, bright orange pedal is actually a stereo practice amplifier. The clean channel and the OD channel provide you with enough basic tones for when you need to just play and try things out. You can use the built-in footswitch to change channels. The OD channel has two settings labelled Classic and Hi Gain which you can be toggled betwee using the other footswitch.
The Jam Buddy has two small speakers that give you a total of 4W of power. There’s a rechargeable battery which can run for up to three hours, which is handy if you travel a lot. Then you also get Bluetooth 4.0 so that you can play along to backing tracks as you practise. Just send a song over from your smartphone, for example, and you have a neat little rig for jamming out ideas. Neat.
The unit also includes a delay effect, which has controls for Time, Mix and Feedback. I would imagine this will make it easier to get your guitar sound to sit in with your backing tracks, as a touch of ambience will help blend in your guitar’s tone with pre-recorded material. The Jam Buddy has been developed to work with signals coming from effect pedals, too, so you can use your favourite effects “in front” of it.
The Jam Buddy comes with a power supply for recharging and a headphone socket for silent practice. This makes for a lot of bang for your buck, as they say. I own a few JOYO pedals myself, in amongst the myriad of products the company makes, there are a few great designs that are very useable.
