Battery-Powered Synths

The most inspiring moments tend to happen when you step away from your usual surroundings. A vacation filled with unforgettable experiences and exciting encounters is the best example of this. Isn’t it a shame that the most beautiful places in the world usually don’t have any power outlets? And that’s when we synth geeks often look on with a bit of envy at our colleagues on guitar, who can simply pull their travel guitar out of their luggage to play by the campfire.

But there’s a solution: if you have one of these battery-powered synths and a pair of headphones in your backpack, nothing stands in the way of a groove session at the end of the world. Tip: Be sure to get a suitable bag or case for your synth to protect it while traveling!

Of course, all synths on this list can also be powered in other ways. And if you’re not on the go, that’s usually the better option, not least to save batteries. For the occasional session far from the next power outlet, though, battery-powered synths are a great option.

Can you Run a Synth off a Power Bank?

If your synth doesn’t have a battery compartment or, even better, a built-in rechargeable battery, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re tied to a power outlet. Many synths that normally use external power adapters will happily run off a USB power bank. All you need is the appropriate adapter cable (e.g., from the myVolts Ripcord series*), and you’re good to go.

Important: Be sure to check the voltage, polarity (negative terminal inside or outside), and current draw to avoid damaging your synth. The voltage and polarity must match the specifications printed near your synth’s DC input. As for the current (in amps), the cable must be able to deliver at least the value your synth requires. For example, if your synth draws 500 mA (equivalent to 0.5 A), using a Ripcord cable rated at 1 A is perfectly fine.

Teenage Engineering OP-XY: Review
Teenage Engineering OP-XY · Source: Teenage Engineering

If money is no issue, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more powerful battery-powered synth to tuck in your hand luggage than the Teenage Engineering OP-XY. That said, the term ‘synth’ doesn’t really do it justice: Weighing less than 1 kg, the OP-XY is also a sampler and a sequencer capable of controlling external devices—in short, a complete pocket-sized studio.

More Information

In addition to eight different synth engines, the OP-XY offers a drum sampler, a multisampler, and a synth sampler. You can sample via the audio input or the built-in microphone, so any sound around you can become part of your music. An extensive effects section, a looper, and a sequencer with 16 tracks—eight for internal sounds and eight for external devices—round out this portable powerhouse. Oh, and Teenage Engineering even included a small speaker. According to the manufacturer, the built-in rechargeable battery lasts up to 16 hours—enough for all but the very longest flights you could take.

Unlike those, however, the AIRA Compact devices feature built-in rechargeable batteries that last up to 4.5 hours and can be charged via USB-C.

The T-8 Beat Machine delivers the classic drum sounds of the TR-606, TR-808, and TR-909, as well as a TB-303-style bass part. The J-6 Chord Synth, which emulates the Juno-60, handles the chords. The S-1 Tweak Synth is inspired by the SH-101 but offers four-voice polyphony. And the awesome P-6 Creative Sampler—my favorite of the bunch—is a compact sampler with six tracks, a built-in microphone, sample slicing, a granular engine, and more.

KORG microKORG 2: The microKORG is all Grown-up Now!

Introducing the KORG microKORG2: A Classic Virtual Analogue is Reborn
KORG microKORG2 · Source: KORG

No list of battery-powered synths could be complete without the synth that single-handedly started the portable trend. The microKORG 2 builds on the incredibly successful predecessor and carries the concept forward. With eight voices and now three oscillators per voice instead of two, it offers significantly more sonic potential than the original microKORG released in 2002. In addition to virtual-analog waveforms, the oscillators also deliver DWGS waves and one-shot samples. Also new is a multimode filter that can morph between different types.

More Information

The built-in vocoder with a gooseneck microphone has been part of the microKORG’s recipe for success from the very beginning. With the microKORG 2, however, KORG has significantly expanded the microphone’s capabilities: in addition to vocoder sounds, the new vocal processor also delivers autotune and harmonizer effects. The synth even features a built-in looper.

The KORG microKORG 2 can run on six AA batteries if desired. You can get it at Thomann*.
