Inspired Acoustics has chosen some big words to describe INSPIRATA, its new convolution reverb plug-in. The developer calls INSPIRATA “the ultimate next-generation immersive reverb workstation”. For a limited time, the Lite version is available for free. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.

According to the developer, INSPIRATA is the result of many years of research, with the goal to “create a shockingly realistic and immersive sound experience”. At its core, it’s a convolution reverb that uses samples of real acoustic spaces. The library contains everything from famous concert halls and churches to clubs, airports, offices, garages and various small rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms. Depending on which version of INSPIRATA you choose, it currently measures up to 135 GB in size. You can further adjust the acoustic characteristics of the spaces using parameters like decay, width, distance and purity.

So what sets INSPIRATA apart from other convolution reverbs? INSPIRATA focuses heavily on giving you a great deal of control over the positioning of the sound sources in the virtual space. Depending on the version, you can place multiple sound sources in the space and move them around. The listener position can also be adjusted. The developer says that this lets you work as if you were physically present in the room, looking for the sweet spot.

These positions can also be automated, and this is where it gets interesting. According to Inspired Acoustics, you can automate the movement of sound sources and the listener position, and the sound will follow smoothly, without artifacts. This lets you get creative with spatial positioning in a number of ways, not just in music production, but also in post production and cinematic mixing.

Sound sources can be positioned freely

Up to 22.2 surround sound

The stereo realm doesn’t really do this concept justice, so the larger two of the four editions of INSPIRATA are surround capable. INSPIRATA Professional Edition supports multichannel output options up to a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration. The full-blown INSPIRATA Immersive Edition can do everything up to 22.2 surround sound.

I’m always skeptical when a developer uses words like “ultimate”, “revolutionary” and “for the first time in history”. But the attention to detail and level of control is certainly impressive. If you’re serious about your reverbs, I think it’s definitely worth checking out. And with the Lite Edition being available free of charge for a limited time, there’s really no reason not to.
