One of the gear highlights of 2021 was without doubt PWM’s new Malevolent analogue synthesizer. When it burst onto the scene at Superbooth 2021, we were suitably impressed by its character, features and affordability. Now we’re excited to give away one in our Gearnews December Raffle!

Malevolent Analogue Synthesizer by PWM

Malvolent is one of those synths that, when you hear about it for the first time, it just pulls you in. It’s an intriguing mix of analogue and digital, desktop and performance, modular and non-modular. 2 VCOs are on offer with saw, triangle and pulse outputs as well as a mix output, shape control, 2 FM inputs and individual mixing. A 2-pole multimode VCF with modulation inputs is on hand, too, as well as two envelopes and an LFO. Now add in a total of 19 inputs and 19 outputs and you have a extremely adaptable synthesizer.

The 32 velocity-sensitive mini-keys are independent of the analogue circuit. The arp has 6 types, latch and up to 6 octaves. The joystick gives you some pitch bend, portamento and vibrato for spontaneous play. And it’s designed to be portable, being bus powered, although solid with enough physical heft to give the feel of a well-made synth.

Sonically, Malevolent has lots of personality. There’s plenty of bite and attitude here, and you can prod it to gurgle, spit and hiss. But this analogue monophonic synth can also do smooth, subtle textures. Robin was so impressed by the Malevolent that he included it in his end-of-year Best Synths 2021 list.
