Big Muff 2 Family Expands (Again!)
The Big Muff 2 circuit was recently uncovered from a shed and revived by Josh Scott and Daniel Danger, to much fanfare.
This dual-op-amp Big Muff Pi circuit was created in the ’70s by Bob Myer and Mike Matthews, and the long-lost circuit has seen a few recent variations, including the standard edition by EHX, the bass version, and a limited-run ‘big box’ edition released by JHS Pedals, plus the recent Big Muff 2 with Tone Wicker version.
This month, the Big Muff 2 onslaught continues with a Deluxe model aimed squarely at bass players who require more control over their fuzz tones.
Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi 2
The EHX Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi 2 is a dual-op-amp fuzz designed for bass players and expands the feature set of the recent Bass Big Muff Pi 2, adding even more control and routing options. The pedal controls include the standard Volume, Tone, and Sustain.
However, they also add a Blend control to help maintain low-end definition. This allows players to mix in enough unaffected signal to maintain the note attack, etc.
Crossover
Another key upgrade is the footswitchable Crossover section, which splits the bass signal into two paths.
This includes a High-Pass Filter and a Low-Pass Filter. Players can then use the HPF and LPF cutoff controls to adjust the signal from tight, modern distortion to massive fuzz tones. Handy for really sculpting fuzz tones to taste and activating them with a single stomp on a footswitch.
Noise Gate
To help maintain some more control over the fuzz, EHX has also added a built-in noise gate and a -10dB Input Pad for use with active basses. These features help the effect work in both live and studio environments by offering useful adjustments directly on the pedal.
They have also given the pedal an XLR DI Output and a Buffered Direct Out. This allows you to send the signal to mixing desks or audio interfaces easily and to send a clean signal out when using dual-amp setups.
It also has a latching and momentary switching setting, so that you can either have the effect on and off as normal, or hold your foot down on the footswitch for a quick momentary blast of fuzz!
