Big Muff 2
The Big Muff 2 was recovered from a shed and recently revived by Josh Scott and Daniel Danger, to much fanfare.
This dual-op-amp Big Muff Pi circuit was created in the ’70s by Bob Myer and Mike Matthews, and the long-lost circuit has seen a few recent variations, including the standard edition by EHX, the bass version, and a limited-run ‘big box’ edition released by JHS Pedals.
Tone Wicker
This latest iteration includes the familiar Volume, Tone, and Sustain controls for a Big Muff we all know and love. It just adds two new switches to the design for a few more options.
First, the 3-position Tone Wicker switch adds high-frequency filters to your signal, boosting clarity and presence. It’s the perfect tool for achieving tighter articulation or a sharper, more “cutting” fuzz tone.
Next up is the Tone Bypass switch, which removes the tone control stack from the circuit entirely. This “unleashes” the pedal, providing a raw, high-output sound with zero frequency colouring.
Dual Op Amp
The ‘standard’ Big Muff already has a Tone Wicker version, which I have owned for many years and still like using.
This new Big Muff 2 version adds the same functions, but you get the rougher sound the dual op-amp design offers, instead of the smooth sustain of a standard Big Muff.
It features True Bypass and offers both latching and momentary footswitch modes.
Electro-Harmonix is certainly making the most of all these variations of the Big Muff 2 design, which makes it a little confusing for anyone new to the circuit when choosing which one to go for.
This Tone Wicker version is essentially the regular Big Muff 2 (the red one) with a few added tonal tweaks, which may be useful for some.
