The new Z Wreck Jr is a boutique 15-Watt amp available in both head and combo formats. It’s based on the Z Wreck, an amp designed by the late Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Amps that he developed in cooperation with American country star Brad Paisley.

Dynamic & non-master volume

This brand new Z Wreck Jr model is a sweet little 15-Watt amp that uses three 12AX7 preamp tubes, a pair of 6n14n power tubes and one 5Y3 rectifier tube. Although it’s derived from a larger amp with no master volume, this version includes a Master control to keep a handle on the power for smaller venues or practising at home. Dr Z says this amp generates “chiming cleans and blooming overdrive”. Sounds tasty.

The main control panel has knobs for Volume, Master, Bass, Treble and Cut, making it a simple amp to use. That’s often a good thing when using a tube amp. If you opt for the combo version, it comes loaded with a single Celestion Greenback 12″ speaker.

Z Wreck Jr

Dr Z has a fantastic reputation for building high-quality tube amps, and this new Z Wreck Junior looks as though it could be a lovely low power amp setup for players that want a dynamic, punchy amp with smooth drive tones. I would encourage you to take a listen to the official demo video below to get an idea of what to expect form his new model.

It is more affordable than the standard Z Wreck version. And the lower wattage might be desirable for a lot of players. I prefer lower wattage amps, so this model appeals to me a lot. I find 15-20-Watts is all I need these days, so this falls right into that category.

No frills

Overall, I like the simplicity of the Z Wreck Junior. No effects loop here, just a single channel. If it feels like you’re compromising on the functionality, you will, no doubt, be rewarded with great tube tones. The price has yet to be officially announced, but I understand it will be substantially lower in price than the Z Wreck models.

RRP – TBC
