The D’Angelico Mark Whitfield Excel SS Soho is a collaboration with the Grammy-winning guitarist. Inspired by his favourite guitars, this hollow-bodied 15″ single-cutaway model has some sweet tones.
Mark Whitfield Excel SS Soho
The Mark Whitfield Excel SS Soho is a stunning-looking guitar that comes in a Dark Cherry Burst finish with gold hardware throughout.
This is a small-bodied thinline archtop hollow body design, that uses a laminated flame maple back and sides paired with a laminated spruce top.
It comes with a gloss-finished three-piece, slim C-shape neck with a 16” radius ebony bound fretboard with pearl split-block inlays and 22 frets. Then it has a set of Grover 509 Super Rotomatic locking tuners, an aluminium Skyscrape truss rod cover with Whitfield’s signature and a TUSQ nut.
This model has a Stairstep tailpiece and an ornate wood-panelled pickguard. Along with five-ply binding on the body and seven-ply on the headstock.

Kent Armstrong
It comes equipped with a single Kent Armstrong Jazzy Joe floating mini-humbucker in the neck position, which is controlled by volume and tone knobs. Whitfield took a long time choosing the correct pickup for this model and it sounds very dynamic and warm in the video below.
Overall, the guitar is inspired by some of Whitfield’s favourite jazz guitars. It certainly looks like he has great taste in guitars.

Verdict
This is a great-looking and sounding guitar. It is definitely the type of instrument you would want for sweet Jazz runs and chord progressions. I’m impressed they could make it for this price point, as it isn’t super expensive, yet it looks very classy.
A great design overall and is perfect for the job it was designed for.
