Triptychon
This Crazy Tube Circuits design offers three very useful guitar effects in one pedal. Triptychon is a three-in-one pedal designed to give you the rich, layered sound of a vintage studio setup, regardless of what amp you’re using. It combines the three essentials of classic guitar tone: fuzz, harmonic shaping, and amplifier drive.
Back in the day, legendary guitar tones weren’t just about one pedal; they were the result of pushing a fuzz or treble booster into an already cranked tube amp. This interaction created the sustain and “creaminess” we hear on classic records.
Today, most players use clean amps as a ‘pedal platform’ and rely on pedals for their dirt. While convenient, you often lose that magic interaction between the pedal and the amp. Crazy Tube Circuits has distilled all this into one stompbox, offering a wealth of control and options.
They have used a custom six metal-can silicon transistor design to give it a germanium voice, without the instability of germanium transistors.
Let’s take a look at each section and break down what it offers.
Vintage Fuzz Voices
At the heart of the pedal is an analog fuzz engine with four modes, modeled after the most famous guitar circuits in history. You can switch between the touch-sensitive feel of a Fuzz Face, the bite of a Vox Tone Bender, or the heavy, aggressive saturation of the legendary Tone Bender Mk1.5 and MkII.
It covers everything classic from vintage grit to a total wall of sound, giving you four iconic vintage fuzz personalities in a single dial. This middle section is the core tonality of the Triptychon, and it is a silicon-based design throughout.
Boost & Upper Octave Fuzz
Next up is the right panel, which adds extra harmonic flavour with two different modes. In boost mode, you can choose between a sharp, cutting treble boost or a warmer, mid-focused sound. If you switch to octave mode, it acts as an upper-octave fuzz with two distinct options, one that’s clear and articulate, and another that’s thick and saturated.
Amp Drive
Finally, the left panel works like a cranked tube amp rather than a standard overdrive. It creates the perfect environment for your fuzz and boosters by adding the compression and feel they need to really shine. You can use it to add a bit of sustain or push it harder to shape your whole sound, giving you the response of a real amplifier right on your board.
Buffers
Classic vintage fuzz /treble booster pedals often lose their magic when used after buffers, wireless systems, or active pickups. Triptychon solves this with switchable anti-buffer circuits that restore your guitar’s natural feel and response.
Simply turn these on if there’s a buffer or active signal before the pedal, and leave them off if you’re plugging in directly with a standard guitar. To keep things simple, the drive section can be linked to either the fuzz or boost footswitch.
If you want more control, you can connect an optional external XT footswitch to run the drive section independently, giving you total flexibility without cluttering your board. This pedal has a lot crammed into a small footprint, and it could be great for smaller setups or as the core tone for your rig.
A lot is going on; however, it is all clearly labeled, so it should be simple enough to use. Think of it as three distinct sections, and it all makes sense. Just avoid tweaking all those mini toggle switches mid-set when playing live!
