The original Cosmix is one of my favourite compact Eurorack mixers. The Cosmix Pro keeps it compact but expands the versatility by adding an aux, metering, and a more pro signal chain.

Cosmix Pro

Cosmotronic makes good-looking modules, and the Cosmix Pro is no exception. It’s wider than the original at 22HP, making the knobs less fiddly to access. It has these fabulous LED meters on every channel and on the master output. The mute switches have been upgraded to some rather nice, clickless light-up buttons, which give a very clear indication as to what’s going on. It definitely scores well on the layout and presentation.

For mixing, you get 4 mono channels and 2 stereo channels. The mono channels have a useful low-cut switch to remove some of that rumble. In contrast, the stereo channels have a +18dB gain boost switch to bring line-level gear up to Eurorack levels. This means you could plug an external synth or other equipment straight into one of these channels.

All 6 channels have pan knobs, and the stereo channels also enjoy some CV-controlled panning. We now have two auxiliary channels, one in mono and one in stereo, both with separate returns. The mono channels have send knobs for both, whereas the stereo channels only route to the stereo aux 2.

Expandability

There are connections on the back to chain up more than one Cosmix Pro. It’s even compatible with the original Cosmix, so it’s a great way of expanding your setup without having to completely replace an existing module. Possible expander modules include an EQ, a saturation module and an output summing module with balanced outputs and headphones.

I’ve got a lot of time for Cosmotronic; I think they make handsome, useful and well-thought-out modules. I’m a little sad not to see the drive circuit make it across from the original Cosmix, but then the Pro is aimed at giving you a more transparent, low-noise mixing solution. Besides, you can easily add the Cosmotronic Perdam analogue distortion module and patch it into an aux.
