Cort has just announced the G280 Select, an HSS layout S-style model with a figured maple that’s available in Trans Black or Amber finishes. With premium features and at a very affordable price point, could this be the perfect all-rounder for guitarists on a moderate budget?

Cort makes some pretty amazing guitars at price points that are affordable, and the new G280 model is no exception. This update to the G280DLX comes loaded with a high-output Voiced Tone VTH-77 bridge humbucker and a pair of VTS-63 single-coil pickups, wired via a five-way blade switch and a single volume and tone control.

Trans Black or Amber

If you like a fancier top then, the G280 Select has an alder body with a figured maple cap in either in Trans Black or Amber. I can’t help thinking that Cort could, perhaps, included a few more interesting colours to make these models stand out a bit more in an already crowded marketplace. Each model has a Pearloid pickguard, which I’m not a huge fan of personally, but you may love.

The Canadian hard maple neck has the Cort Ergo-V profile and comes with a 12-16″ compound radius rosewood fingerboard loaded with 22 frets. All in all, a fairly modern-style neck and a nice flattish playing area that should be smooth and fast.

Steel

The G280 Select has a CTA-III recessed vibrato and uses stainless steel saddles, a solid machined-steel block and a steel base plate. That sounds like it will last a lifetime and give you super smooth operation. Cort states this set-up will give “greatly improved sustain, faster and punchier pick attack, and a more coherent and balanced fundamental tone.” It is paired with a set of Cort staggered locking tuners, so tuning stability should be rock solid on this model.

On paper, at least, this guitar has great specifications at this price. Cort certainly has a track record for providing quality instruments for those with less to spend. Certainly, this guitar that should be on your radar if you are looking for a modern S-style with an HSS pickup configuration. I just wish they had offered some more colour choices, but this could, of course, come in the future.

If they would re-design the headstock shape, I would grab one immediately. I usually don’t care too much how the instruments look, but the look of this headstock just makes me cringe, sadly.

I have to say I don’t find the headstock shape an issue really. I’ve seen a lot worse.
