Bedroom Compressor MkII from Viator DSP is a delightfully straightforward compressor that has a few tricks up its sleeve. This week’s collection of the best free plugins also brings you the equally useful Delay Eleven by Platone Studio, and Mirage – a weirdly fascinating sampled instrument unlike any other.

Did I write last week that Viator DSP was on a roll? Maybe I should’ve saved that for this week! Bedroom Compressor MkII is an easy-to-use compressor that covers all your dynamic processing basics, and then some. In addition to the basic threshold, ratio, attack, and release controls, the plugin offers a variable-knee control for non-linear compression, a sidechain high-pass filter, and a mix knob. You can even choose from VCA or opto modes at the push of a button. Very nice indeed!

Bedroom Compressor MkII is available for free, but you’re encouraged to name your own price if you like it. The plugin runs on macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.

Now here’s a sampled instrument you don’t see every day. Mirage from MNTRA Instruments is a sample pack for the free MNDALA engine that combines ancient Indian Dhrupad vocals with a Church bass from the 1800s – a kind of oversized cello. Not sure what to make of this unlikely combination? Give it a listen – Mirage delivers a fascinating range of cinematic textures, unusual timbres, and captivating effects. The MNDALA engine offers a complete set of sound shaping options.

The MNDALA engine runs on macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats. The developer recommends 2 GB of free space.

Platone Studio Delay Eleven

Like last week’s Flex Reverb, Platone Studio’s Delay Eleven brings you an essential effect – but not without some useful additions and creative possibilities! In addition to the delay time (with tempo sync, of course) and feedback, you get to adjust the balance and width of the effect. There’s also a Drive control for some extra grit, and you can shape the frequency content of the delay using the Bright and Dark knobs. A useful delay that’s easy to throw on a track anytime you need some repetitions.

Delay Eleven is available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, and AU formats.
