Acustica Audio expands the new Fire series with Fire The Clip, a single-knob clipper plug-in. The developer says that Fire The Clip is an “ultra linear” digital clipper that was created to overcome the shortcomings of other true peak clippers.

Acustica launched the Fire series of single-knob plug-ins back in February with the Fire Filters. For the second release in the series, the developer has applied the same concept to a true peak clipper.

According to Acustica, Fire The Clip delivers high-quality clipping with an intuitive user interface that requires just a few clicks. The company also says that it helps to achieve competitive loudness levels without introducing the artifacts and distortion associated with inter-sample peaks.

“Single knob” isn’t 100 percent accurate, as the plug-in does offer some additional controls besides the main knob. You can choose from four “custom and super linear” clipping modes: Std, Acu1, Acu2 and Eco. The oversampling rate is also adjustable and can be as high as 1024x, which is quite impressive. Moreover, Acustica claims that Fire The Clip has a “perfect phase response”.

Below the main knob is a set of buttons that lets you set the input level range, adjust the ceiling (including true peak mode), activate a -5 dB output attenuation, and turn on auto-gain if desired. The plug-in also features a slider for adjusting the knee. And finally, there’s a pair of meters for gain reduction and output level.

If you’re looking for an intuitive clipper plug-in that’s easy to use but still offers a comprehensive set of features, Fire The Clip looks like an interesting new option.

Price and compatibility

Fire The Clip is now available from the developer’s website for €49.

The plug-in runs on macOS 10.14 or higher (including Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or higher. It’s available in VST, AAX and AU formats. You’ll also need the free Aquarius app for installation and activation.
