PEEL STEMS 2: zplane Finally Makes High-Quality Real-Time Stem Separation Actually Fast
Better Sound Quality, a Reworked Interface, and Full Control Right Inside Your DAW
zplane just released PEEL STEMS 2, a major update to its real-time stem separation plugin. Version 2 brings noticeably lower latency, better separation quality, and a reworked interface. That makes real-time stem separation even more practical for everyday DAW work.
zplane PEEL STEMS 2: Everything on Latency, Sound Quality, and Pricing
PEEL STEMS 2: Latency Cut Nearly in Half
The biggest leap here is latency. The new version of zplane’s proprietary real-time stem separation tech drops processing latency at 44.1kHz from 483ms down to 245ms, basically cutting it in half. Wow. Separation quality and clarity of the isolated stems got a boost too. For live use or quick reactions while mixing, that’s a difference you’ll actually feel.
On Intel Macs, latency sits a bit higher at 385ms compared to Apple Silicon, but that’s still a clear improvement over the previous version. Tim Flohrer, co-founder and CTO of zplane, put it this way: “With PEEL STEMS 2, we wanted to push real-time stem separation within DAW-native workflows further. With significantly reduced latency and improved audio quality, PEEL STEMS 2 represents a major step forward in stem separation technology.”
A Reworked Interface and More Control Over Isolation
Performance aside, the whole workflow got some attention too. The interface has been redesigned with clearer visual feedback and faster, more intuitive operation, plus new colors for each stem. The isolation slider now has a stronger effect and a wider control range, giving you more nuance for subtle adjustments between a fully isolated stem and the full mix.

The Focus EQ, familiar from the original Peel, got an upgrade too. The Focus Frame now displays the upper and lower cutoff frequencies directly, making it easier to target specific frequency ranges. Clearly, workflow was just as much of a priority here as raw performance.
Why Real-Time Stem Separation Actually Matters
For anyone who hasn’t used PEEL STEMS before: the plugin splits audio live into drums, bass, vocals, and other, right inside any AU, VST3, or AAX-compatible DAW, with zero rendering wait. That’s genuinely real-time. The isolation slider fine-tunes the separation, and built-in spectral processing lets you zero in on specific frequency and stereo ranges on top of that.
One thing I really appreciate: all the processing happens locally, no uploading audio anywhere for cloud processing. For anything still tied up in rights, or material you just don’t want sitting on someone else’s servers, that’s a genuine selling point. And the licensing model backs it up: PEEL STEMS 2 is a one-time purchase, no subscriptions, no logins, just unlimited stem separation. Exactly how it should be.
Bottom Line
Cutting latency nearly in half while also improving sound quality is a genuinely solid update for a real-time plugin like this, not just a cosmetic refresh. If you’ve already worked with the original PEEL STEMS, you’ll notice the jump immediately in practice. If you’ve been separating stems offline or in the cloud until now, this is a good moment to take a closer look at the concept.
