With LowEnd Friend, developer 2B Played Music presents an affordable bass processing plug-in. It’s good not just for shaping individual tracks, but also buses, or even the entire mix. Inspired by the everlasting Pultec equalizer, it does a few notable tricks to the bass range in a familiar sounding, but freshly different way.
2B Played Music LowEnd Friend
The Pultec equalizer is known for its ability to simultaneously boost and cut the frequencies around a specific point. For example, you can raise the “heft and presence” lows while cutting the “boom” out. With 2B Played Music’s plug-in, you do not operate this section like a vintage EQ, but simply adjust the frequency and its strength. Controls for low control and clarity complement these parameters.
When saturation and character are called for, you can use the Fold Distortion or the Saturator. The Distortion Mix control lets you dial in exactly how much of the effect you want. The distortion and saturator system in this plug-in also uses the old Pultec designs. While the developer does not reveal how exactly they are implemented, the bass range should sound more defined, with pleasant analogue warmth on top.
A limiter rounds off the plug-in, preventing over-modulation with the use of Level and Mix controls to permit subtle applications of the effect. There is also a meter display to indicate the loudness. For higher fidelity, LowEnd Friend supports up to 16x oversampling.
While competent Pultec emulations are dime-a-dozen, 2B Played opted to spawn something different out of the old tube EQ that never fails to this day. And at a very fair price, too. This is something to be commended!
