Introducing Sugar Bytes Graindad, a new specialized granular effects plug-in. The core of Graindad’s potential lies in the complexity of the unique “Harvester” modulation section, which we’ll get into shortly.
Graindad combines several effects such as timestretching, loop slicing, and pitch shifting with its powerful modulation capabilities and even a step sequencer to provide a mod source separate from your DAW clock.
The Sugar Bytes Graindad interface
From the main window, Graindad’s extensive controls are clearly divided into sections. From top to bottom, you start with the transient detector and slice selection display, the main granular controls, and finally the synthesis parameters and effects below.
The controls are geared toward realtime manipulation and detailed sound design, so it may look overwhelming at first. However, once you familiarize yourself with the layout, you’ll find that everything has its purpose and there is little space for gimmicks.
Harvester
The Harvester allows you to create simultaneous modulation paths that allow you to manipulate Graindad’s 12 main controls. What’s more, for each parameter object you add to the Harvester window, you have additional modulation layers called “moons” that can be automated or randomized for even more detail.
If that’s not enough for you, the Harvester also has parameters for realtime MIDI triggers. You can add assignable “breakpoints” along the modulation paths for each of the 12 Graindad controls. This feature can be accessed via the “Auto-Pilot” page, putting macro controls at your fingertips in a very customizable way.

Sugar Bytes Graindad can be used standalone or as VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX on macOS (10.12 or later) and Windows (7 or later). You can download the PDF manual and a free demo version of Graindad from the Sugarbytes website.
